It’s not just strategically interesting, it’s physically satisfying to roll the dice and watch their animations. You’ll roll many sided dice to decide on terrain conditions, fog of war, status ailments, mana regeneration, and on and on. One of the most entertaining aspects of the game has to do with the dice mechanics. You can grind for gear, but the pacing of the game doesn’t really encourage it. Neither the melding or loot systems allow for you to take everything with you, so you will have to make some tough choices along the way. At the end of each battle, you’re awarded points that allow you to nab loot left behind. Each piece of gear can hold up to two spells, and melding gear ups its stats and/or adds a new spell. In Crimson Shroud there are three main characters that make up your party, and rather than leveling up, your skills are learned through battle and spells linked directly to gear. The elements of gameplay and story come together to make for one of the very best experiences I’ve had on my 3DS to date, and that’s including games like Ocarina of Time, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and Fire Emblem: Awakening. That being said, it’s still an incredibly wonderful game. However, where it kind of counts the most – experience – Crimson Shroud plays more along the lines of a turn-based-strategy game. You have a party, battles are turn based, and the story progresses in a manner most folks attribute to your typical RPG. By all accounts, it plays like a table-top RPG (TRPG). It’s kind of a misnomer to call Crimson Shroud an RPG. But this latest opportunity to check out Crimson Shroud wasn’t gonna pass me by. Missed the first sale on this game, and kicked myself for doing so. The MSF library is essentially no longer being actively developed, but the current 3.1 version works fine for me. MSF originally came in two versions, a free Express Edition and a for-purchase enterprise edition, but the enterprise edition has been discontinued. The installation wizard tells you you’re installing the Express Edition. I prefer to use 32-bit libraries when experimenting so I clicked on that link, which gave me the option to run or save the MicrosoftSolverFoundation.msi installation package. The location of the download has tended to move around over time but I found it at bit.ly/1vayGh1. The MSF version 3.1 library is available as a separate code download. All normal error checking has been removed to keep the main ideas clear. All the code is presented here and it is also available in the code download that accompanies this article at /magazine/msdnmag0814. The demo program is coded using C# but you should be able to refactor the demo to other. This article assumes you have at least intermediate-level programming skills and a vague idea of what Sudoku puzzles are, but does not assume you know anything about constraint satisfaction problems or the MSF library. The demo concludes by displaying the solution.įigure 1 Sudoku Using the Microsoft Solver Foundation Then, behind the scenes, the demo uses the MSF library to solve the puzzle. Next, it programmatically defines constraints (required conditions) that are common to all Sudoku puzzles, and then sets up the data constraints that are specific to the puzzle. The demo console application begins by setting up and displaying the data for a typical Sudoku puzzle. To get an idea of where this article is headed, take a look at the demo program in Figure 1. And third, you might just find that solving Sudoku puzzles programmatically is interesting and entertaining. Second, this article will introduce you to the MSF library and its capabilities. First, the techniques presented here can be used to solve many realistic problems. Although it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever need to solve a Sudoku puzzle as part of your normal work responsibilities, there are at least three reasons why you might want to read this article. One way to tackle CSPs programmatically is to use the Microsoft Solver Foundation (MSF) library. Volume 29 Number 8 Test Run : Solving Sudoku Puzzles Using the MSF LibraryĪ Sudoku puzzle is an example of what’s called a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP). And to really drive the ambiguity home, trespassing in different restricted areas result in different punishments. This makes learning the ins and outs of where you can and cannot go in a particular portion of a particular map on a particular mode total guesswork. The problem is that there is usually no visual language in either the map design or HUD that distinguishes where these boundaries are, and many can simply be ignored to unfairly access a legal area. The six maps are at their best in this small-scale setting, but even here the unintuitive boundaries managed to frustrate me ever so often.Īrtificially imposed “restricted areas” announce their presence with bright-red on-screen text and an angry AI callout when you step over their invisible borders. The tension is similar to that felt in Counter-Strike’s Bomb Defusal or Hostage Rescue, but with the chance for redemption after death. The catch is that because dead players can only respawn if their team takes an objective, the ensuing high-stakes strategy makes each match enjoyable and replayable. The objective is deceptively simple: kill everyone on the other team or take all three uncontested capture points, whichever comes first. All three are enjoyable in their own right and offer sufficiently unique experiences, but Firefight stands well above the rest. “The non-competitive versus playlist contains two modes that support up to 32 players: Push, Skirmish, and Firefight which supports up to 12. While some of these examples may have a real-world analog, they feel to me like solid choices that were made for the sake of better gameplay, and I appreciate them. Kicking in a door has the effect in instantly killing anyone on the other side, and you can even jump on a grenade to reduce or prevent the damage dealt to nearby allies. Other compromises are even less subtle, like HUD elements that display the position of allies through walls. And while its commitment to realism is apparent throughout, Insurgency: Sandstorm also knows when gameplay should come first. For instance, even in the absence of enemy hit indicators I was rarely left pondering an enemy’s fate thanks to the impressively large and (hopefully) exaggerated mist of blood that landing a shot produces. And while such scenes eventually become secondary to the fixation on gameplay, a few particularly unsettling scenarios managed to evoke an audible “oof” from me, even well after the 30-hour mark. This brutal, at times tragic depiction of war certainly makes an impact at first. If your site goes down, you may not be aware of it until you get complaints from angry visitors or happen to visit it yourself. You might be the subject of a DDoS attack, someone could hack into your site to post unauthorized content. With so many potential causes for your site to go down and so many web pages, it’s impossible for anyone to check a website manually. There are multiple reasons why your site or parts of your site could go down. Why Monitor Your WordPress Uptime and Downtime? Both money and your online reputation are at stake. Search engines also penalize websites that have too much downtime, costing you valuable SEO points. That means that you could be losing money on the sales you can’t make or losing readers who are frustrated that they can’t access your content. When your site is down, no one can access it. Not surprisingly, uptime is what you want. Downtime is the opposite – when visitors to your site can’t get to some or all of the areas they want to visit. Simply put, uptime is all the time when your website is accessible and working properly. Sometimes, more “natural” causes – such as a sudden surge in traffic to your site or issues at your hosting company – can also bring down your website.įor these reasons (and others) it is crucial to be alerted anytime your website or server goes down and is suddenly unavailable to visitors. WordPress sites get thousands of attempted attacks every day from hackers who want to bring down your site, along with many others.
